UPDATES: How to Work Overseas and Fly for Free

flying around the world
Hey, everyone! Over the last few months, I’ve been stealthily updating my two main guides, How to Teach English Overseas and The Ultimate Guide to Travel Hacking.

After months of edits and redesigns, they are finally live on the website and out in the world! Today, I want to share what’s different and updated in each of the books:

How to Teach English Overseas

how to teach english overseasTeaching English in Asia was one of the best experiences of my life. It changed me. That time I spent as a fish out of water, trying to make a life for myself in a foreign country, provided me with invaluable life lessons and skills that helped make me the independent person I am today. (Plus, it helped me earn a ton of money to extend my travels!)

Teaching is one of the best and easiest jobs for travelers to get in order to further their adventures, live in a different culture, become independent, and make a difference in the lives of others.

My guide walks you through the all the steps of the job-finding process: what skills you need, how to get you teaching certification (and if you need it), what kind of jobs are available, creating the perfect résumé, nailing your interview, reviewing contracts, and landing that perfect job.

This edition updates all the existing content in the book, including recent changes to teaching certification programs, the types of jobs you can get, and employment and visa requirements. Additionally, the information and working conditions for the following countries were also updated:

Argentina, Belgium, China, Czech Republic, Dubai, Ecuador, France, Germany, Guatemala, Italy, Japan Mexico, Poland, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, Spain, Taiwan, Thailand, Ukraine

Besides the above, the 2016 update includes the following new information:

  • An interview with Bruce Jones, President and Founder of International TEFL Academy
  • A section on how to craft the perfect résumé (with examples of actual good and bad résumés)
  • A section on how to avoid scam schools and nail your interview (with a checklist of dos and don’ts)
  • Information on jobs for non-native speakers and those without college degrees
  • Detailed country guides and job information for Hong Kong and Vietnam

I’m super proud of this edition and worked on it a lot with current teachers from around the world to ensure that it is accurate, up-to-date, and realistic. There’s a lot of information online about teaching overseas but most of it is dated and designed to up-sell job placement programs. This is just straight forward information on how to get a job, and includes 14 interviews with teachers providing you with honest, real world examples of what it’s like to teach overseas.

The Ultimate Guide to Travel Hacking

how to travel hack the worldTravel hacking is what keeps me on the road. It’s how I enjoy free business-class flights and hotel rooms, pay for trains, wipe charges off my credit card statements, and get lounge access throughout the world. It’s one of the most important tools in the arsenal of a budget traveler, and I am a huge evangelist for this stuff!

If there is one thing that always irks me, it’s that people don’t do this. It may take a little bit of time, but the payoff is so huge! If flight prices are keeping you at home, well, this guide helps eliminate that cost!

Travel hacking is what every expert traveler needs to learn if they want to truly travel cheaper, better, and longer. It’s how I flew from NYC to Melbourne in business class for only $40, few to Sydney for $0, stayed a hotel for a week for free, and got free trains in Europe!

However, travel hacking changes frequently: airlines devalue points or change programs, and banks shut loopholes. But as they say, when one door closes, another opens. I overhaul this book as often as possible, and after some big changes in the industry recently, it was time to update it again!

All the content in the book has been brought up to date. It covers the basics of credit cards, how to find the best rewards card for your goals, how hotel and flight award programs work, how to redeem miles for flights, how to use the ITA Matrix, how to earn multiple miles per dollar spent, how to use gift cards to increase your points balance, and everything in between. It’s an A to Z guide on everything points and miles related.

In addition to updating existing content, this edition has a lot of new content and updated interviews:

  • Updated award charts on the major US airline and international hotel award programs (e.g., Alaska, Delta, United, America, Hilton, Starwood, Hyatt, and Marriott)
  • New information on revenue-based frequent flier programs
  • Added information for those with little or no credit history on how to get the juicy cards
  • Updated interviews with The Points Guy, Head for Points, Canadian Kilometers, and Gary Leff, the travel hacking godfather from View from the Wing
  • Step-by-step tips on finding cheap, non-miles flights and how to book them
  • What to do to get points on the cheap now that manufactured spending is dead
  • New sections and credit card recommendations for Australians, UK citizens, and Canadians
  • Shopping and dining reward program options for Canadian and UK citizens

Travel hacking is one of the best ways to save money on the road. With a few tricks and without spending any more money than you already do, you can rack up free flights and hotels like a boss. This isn’t about spending extra; it’s about being financially smart.

This book comes with a six-month guarantee too. If you can’t get a free flight in that time, I’ll give you your money back…and if you have any issues along the way, you can even call me! (Seriously.)
